Foss Plane


This picture describes how we put strings on the back of our chairs to hold our planes up, so we could wind up the planes to see how many winds it takes to get the planes all the way to the end of the string.

My class and me, made Foss planes. Its very fun here's how we made them.



We made it by first having to sand Popsicle sticks. then we had to cut a regular straw in 2, and use a hole punch, to put a hole in it. Once we put a hole in the straw, we got a second straw (a jumbo straw) and slide on the regular straw on the jumbo straw. Next we had to put the Popsicle sticks on, this part was kind of hard. But we got threw it, you had to hold the sticks together and not have any part of the straw showing on the bottom strings. We had to use a stapler to hold them on. After that we put on a propeller and a clip to hold the rubber band. Next we set up string on the back of our chairs. You had to wind up the propeller to make the plane move. You had to wind the plane clockwise to have it actually move. For mine and my partners plane, it took about 31 winds to get our plane across the string. Next we had to first predict how many winds it would take to get our plane to go half way. We guessed about 14 or 15. Next we had to actually text our plane. The actual amount of winds was 25 winds to get half way, we were way off.

During the experiment we had to test different rubber bands, such as thick yellow, blue, green etc, there was also skinny rubber band the same colors. We had a contest to see who could get to the other side of the string with the lowest amount of winds.

I learned during this experiment, that when your going to change a variable you can only change on variable at a time because, you won't know which variable made the difference in the experiment. Also if you don't wind the plane up the right way, your plane will not move.
